Downloading your ITR is an important step in the tax filing process. It provides you with a copy of your filed tax return, which serves as proof of your income, deductions and tax liabilities. It is essential to keep a copy of your ITR at hand for future reference, loan applications, visa processing and other financial transactions.

Step 1:
Visit the official website of Income tax department.

Step 2:
Click on the 'Login' button if you are an existing user and click on the 'Register' button if you are a new user.

Step 3:
If you are logged in, go to ‘My Account’ and select ‘Download Pre-filled XML.’ Select the Assessment Year for which you need to file a return. Then, select the ITR Form Number that matches the Excel utility you previously downloaded.

Step 4:
Select the relevant ITR form as per the type of income mentioned in the details box, and download it in Microsoft Excel format.

Step 5:
Now you save the XLS file to your computer.

Step 6:
The Excel and XML tools will be stored in the Downloads directory of your PC. By selecting 'Import from XML', you can transfer the data from the pre-filled XML file you downloaded into the Excel tool.
